abstract drawing

Completed this drawing a few days ago. I think I started it weeks ago, and put it down for awhile, and then resumed. It began, I assume, with some ink (maybe pencil before that?), followed by colored pencil and then some more ink details.
It’s on archival 8 ply mat board which is 10 x 8″ – the drawing itself roughly one or two inches smaller. This piece, as with most of the other works I’ve been posting on Instagram, is for sale – if you’re interested in purchasing art please send me an email, these works are priced to move.

Drawing giveaway!

You heard right. I’m planning on giving away a drawing each month to one lucky newsletter subscriber… and it could be you! The only requirement is that you’ve signed up to receive my newsletter. It’s free to sign up and you can unsubscribe at any time. I’m thinking the giveaway will be around the middle of each month, so you still have time to subscribe for the July drawing.

I’m thinking, since this is the first month of trying it out, I’ll pick a random subscriber around the middle of the month. Subscribe now and I’ll have more contest details sent out via newsletter soon.

Find me on YouTube

I’m on YouTube now. I have been for a long time, but I actually started a channel for uploading art videos, and uploaded a time-lapse video of drawing last week.

I’m working on my second upload now, which should be posted today, tomorrow, or the next day. I’m hoping to post about one video per week, sometimes older drawings, sometimes brand new things.

regaining my ability to focus

painmeds-01.png

Most of February and some of March I was recovering from a bicycle accident at home. I did some digital drawing, but wasn’t too motivated to create anything except healed bones (a broken pelvis is quite excruciating!)

I drew this pill bottle using a graphics-tablet and Adobe Illustrator, my left hand pinky finger was broken and made drawing on paper difficult. The bottle was filled with heavy pain meds, which made it hard to think straight, but definitely helped manage the pain. I’m better now, and recovered just in time to be told to stay home due to the global pandemic 😕

Now I’m slowly getting back to drawing, some paper, some digital, and am looking forward to sharing more soon. Please check out and follow my other social media sites if you haven’t already:

John Otter’s drawing process

drawing: pencil outlines get inked, followed by colored pencil and then intricate ink details last. There are some times when I don’t sketch the idea out in pencil first, but lately I have. It takes a little longer, but it’s easier to see where one thing will go under or over another.
