I hesitate to call these drawings; they contain mostly pencil, ink and watercolor – maybe they would be better categorized as mixed media. For these three I began each with very faint pencil lines and/or some watercolor washes, followed by ink and/or charcoal to define lines and add weight. The overall compositions happen organically, an element inserted in a certain place is balanced by another. Once the composition and outlines are complete colored pencil and/or gouache fill in some of the shapes. Patterns and details in ink are scattered throughout during the whole process, sometimes painted over.

podcasts while painting
Do you listen to podcasts while you paint, workout, or commute?
Lately I’ve been listening to podcasts about art while I paint. I know there are a ton of podcasts out there and I haven’t been much of a podcast listener lately.
I recently came across one called the Savvy Painter, which has kept me occupied while painting lately. Each episode is an interview with a different painter about their process, successes, problems and work.
I’m sure there are other great podcasts out there, if you have any favorites I should check out (they don’t have to be art related) let me know in the comments.
Cheers!

new paintings in progress
I recently purchased some nice panels, gesso and matte medium and have been getting to work.
Gessoed and sanded the panels three times to create a smooth surface and begin connecting with them.
They all started with blue grid lines, although I had no intention of using a grid-method to enlarge an image (nice tutorial on that here: How to Use a Grid to Enlarge an Image While Drawing) just wanted to start with some solid right angles.
After the grids I began some underpainting in gouache. Since then I’ve began blocking out some color and will post updates here, Facebook and/or Instagram. I’m looking forward to seeing how things progress, I hope you’re as excited as I am to see what emerges. If you’re looking to purchase art for your walls send me a message as I’m open to commissioned work this fall.
