I recently completed a couple works on paper. They started with watercolor and gouache, colored pencil, conté, charcoal and ink finished them off. These are quite different than my colored pencil and ink on paper work and as much as I love them I decided that you should have the opportunity to own one or both at a very reasonable price. Came down with a head cold a few days ago and have been taking it easy. Spent most of yesterday in bed. Got out of the house this morning for a cup of coffee and drew a little ditty on a pasty wrapper.

Hoping to get back to work on the new panels tonight. Finally found the right balance of marble dust, matte medium and paint to produce the satiny finish I like (approx. 2:2:1).

I recently purchased some nice panels, gesso and matte medium and have been getting to work.

Gessoed and sanded the panels three times to create a smooth surface and begin connecting with them.

They all started with blue grid lines, although I had no intention of using a grid-method to enlarge an image (nice tutorial on that here: How to Use a Grid to Enlarge an Image While Drawing) just wanted to start with some solid right angles.

After the grids I began some underpainting in gouache. Since then I’ve began blocking out some color and will post updates here, Facebook and/or Instagram. I’m looking forward to seeing how things progress, I hope you’re as excited as I am to see what emerges. Sunday Arts District, DTLA + Pasadena

This past Sunday I spent the day at Hauser Wirth & Schimmel, to view Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women, 1947 – 2016 for the second time. It’s a fabulous exhibition and I could spend another few days there. (no photography allowed in the galleries)

After that a Black Dahlia at the Gallery Bar at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. Gorgeous bar and great cocktails.

The Millennium Biltmore Hotel is one of the most historic and beautiful buildings in all of Downtown Los Angeles. If you have never been inside, you need to make time and check this place out. It is gorgeous. While you are there, stop in the Gallery Bar, right off the main entrance lobby for a cocktail. (from dtlaexplorer)

Ended up in Pasadena before heading home for some wine and sketching at Everson Royce – after laying down the initial sketch in graphite I added another heavier layer of conté and smudged it with a blending stick.

After that dinner at Union Pasadena:

Last night I went to Blick in Pasadena to pick up some art supplies. It’s a great store and I love shopping for art supplies. The only problem I have is restraining myself and trying to keep to a budget. At the end of the year I’ll be adding up all the income and expenses and hoping to make a hefty profit. This year I’ve decided to make it easier, usually I keep all the art supply receipts in an envelope (at least the ones I remember), this year I’ll be using Mint’s tagging feature to mark specific purchases as art related expenses. Rather than go into detail here’s a link to a Mint FAQ about using tags.

I ended up purchasing some gesso, matte medium and three 12 x 12 panels, which is exciting because I haven’t been painting lately.
